Learn the essentials about wine (with a special focus on the wines of Italy), following the globally recognized WSET approach during a four or eight night stay at the beautiful medieval Tuscan castle, Castello di Potentino.

The Level 1 WSET course teaches the student the fundamentals so they leave the castle clear about what wines they like and how to verbalise that preference...plus other essentials such as - How wine is made, What are the "Noble" grape varieties, How to select a wine off a wine list, How to corectly serve and store wine and How to spot a faulty wine.

To take the WSET Level 2 course, Level 1 is not obligatory. A willingness to know more about wine and taste a LOT of it is all that is required. At Level 2 'Place' takes precedence, the student will look at where the Noble Grapes grow best (in Champagne, Barolo, Rioja and many more) and what factors contribute to making these grapes grow so beautifully...and why those wines might have a higher price tag. We also get involved this year, in the grape harvest and the pressing of the grapes.
Plus eat fabulous food and participate in morning food and wine pairing workshops and afternoon Masterclasses on cheesemaking, olive oil tasting or Tuscan pork butchery.
Enjoy optional yoga classes and morning hikes amongst ancient olive groves looking over Monte Amiata – Tuscany’s Mount Olympus…and return home with a wine qualification.

  • The course will be led by Decanter Italian wine writer and VIA Italian Wine Ambassador, Emily O’Hare - previously Head Sommelier and Wine Buyer at The River Café.
